Vineyards in Provence
Provence has been producing wine for more than 2000 years making it the oldest wine making region in France. Drinking and making wine is as much a part of the heritage there as it is the way of life.
Provençal wines
The main varieties of grapes used to produce red and rosé wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Syrah, Cinsault and Grenache. For whites, wine makers use Ugni Blanc, Sémillon and Clairette grapes.
The most common wine in Provence is The Côtes de Provence rosé wine, nicknamed petit rosé. This is widely available across the region.
Some grapes are planted within flower crops, others are grown on craggy hills and some are on slopes facing the sea.
