About : Festivals in Provence

As one of the prettiest places in France, Provence is fabulous for festivals and events of the fun kind. The sunny weather is enough to get anyone in the mood for celebrating. Only a few hours from the UK with fabulous food, an intoxicating culture and miles of beautiful scenery it's hardly surprising that events in Provence are popular.

Cannes Film festival: May every year. Probably the most well-known of these events, the annual Cannes Film festival or Festival de Cannes, started in 1946.It attracts movie stars, directors and producers from all over the world. It is held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

The Orange Art Festival or Chorégies d'Orange festival: started in 1860 and is the eldest of all the festivals in Provence and in France. It's held in the Roman Theatre in Orange and is one of the most popular events in Provence. The theatre is one of France's most picturesque monuments and is surprisingly well preserved. It can hold an audience of 9,000. The building has amazing acoustics perfect for musical performances.

Avignon Art Festival: in July. The festival is a large showcase of contemporary drama, dance and theatre both French and foreign. There are usually around 40 productions every year at 20 different venues including churches, school halls and the Pope's Palace It attracts around 100,000 people every year.
