Some furniture designs come and go and some are timeless. Provence is not only home to beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery and wine, it also has some amazing designers and design themes.
The Provencal dream
The country cottage look, originally from Provence, is pastel colours with honey pine furniture, 18th and 19th century limestone mantel pieces and embroidered table clothes that entice people to sit down for tea and biscuits.
The Old Provençal style for furniture design is chic and timeless. Its elegant curves and pastel colours took the design world by storm decades ago and there's no looking back. People in Provence were blown away by its simple style that helped turn a room into a rest haven and a house into a home.
Buying your own piece of Provençal design
During the 18th century most of the best furniture in Provence came from the Bouches-du-Rhône region which still has some of the best antique dealers.
However today they also craft reproductions using aged wood and traditional techniques. The name Dervieux has been associated with authenticity and quality for more than 100 years in Provence. They sell antiques and are also designers and builders of beautiful reproductions, including classic designs, such as the French bread rack.
If you fancy your own Van Gough chair, as painted by the artist in 1888, visit Monleau in Vallabrègues. Artisans have crafted traditional rush-seated chairs in Vallabrègues for centuries. Monleau is the company that designed the chair Van Gough painted, the chaise Camargaise, and it's still available today.
