Provence is in abundance of outdoor markets, all of which display independent traders offering local produce such as olive oils, soft soap and lavender. But if you're looking for an independent shop with a difference and you prefer shops with a boutique theme, Provence has your needs covered.
Designer clothes boutiques
There are more designer clothes shops in Aix than in Marseille, which ultimately means there are more second-hand shops waiting to be devoured in this area of Provence. They offer boutique style at a fraction of the cost.
For the more discerning shopper there's the Trifouille Boutique which offers impeccable pre-worn items of clothing. This is not your typical second-hand clothes shop as the expectations are high – you won't see anything less than top designer labels from collections that are two years old or less. You'll be buying amazing designer clothes at this independent shop, but paying a lot less than off-the-catwalk prices.
Calissons in the boutiques
This traditional French candy is native to Provence and Aix in particular. These pale yellow candies have a texture similar to marzipan but with a fruity flavour, and most of the world's supply of these sweets comes from Provence.
At Confiserie Léonard-Parli, the same family has been making calissons since 1874, and they run an independent boutique shop at the front of their factory complete with traditional calissons and the '13 desserts' that are a Provence Christmas tradition
