The first rays of sunlight shine through the window. For a few seconds we wonder where we are, and then we smile as the first memories of our escapade flood back: the enjoyment of our journey’s first leg, spending quality time together, and then arriving at our destination in the foothills of the Luberon. We made our simple dinner in a tiny cabin, a tomato and bacon omelet cooked over a camping stove…We stretch, slip on some clothes and fold up the bed, not forgetting to

 tuck in the floral blanket. After breakfast on an outside table in the sun, we’re headed for Bonnieux. Two minutes later, we turn the key in the ignition and the motor gives a gentle shake. A few minutes down the road and there are smiles plastered across our faces. This camping car weekend is shaping up to be just what we needed……with a touch of “hippie!” We’ve rented one of the VW Kombis offered by Flower Power Experience, a young company set up in 2010 by Milo van Boeijen, a Dutch man in love with

Provence and the hippie generation’s emblematic camping car. After some tips on how to drive the “old-fashioned” way in our august Volkswagen bus (let the motor warm up, take a good break every couple of hours to give it a rest…), Milo hands us the keys to happiness.

Freedom’s ours! Admittedly, we’ve lowered our expectations. We won’t go as far as San Francisco with a stop at Woodstock. But our compact camper allows us to go anywhere on Provence’s local roads, and make our way into the heart of the smallest village, unlike

modern camping cars. Our Kombi soon gives us a taste for escape, and surprising comfort considering its venerable age. A bedroom, dining room, kitchen and sundeck all in a few square meters, plus four wheels and a motor what more could we ask for? Honey, let’s open the window and let the sun shine in!
