The Art of Distillation
In Nyons, the Bleu Provence Distillery extracts the nectar from herbs and flowers, delicately collecting their essential oils, the necessary ingredients for producing perfumes and cosmetics. We met with Philippe Soguel, an expert distiller, educator and a lover of Provence, to learn about his passion.

If you ever have the good fortune to pass through the Drôme region, Nyons is a city worth visiting. Situated to the east of Montélimar, this little town holds some real treasures: besides it famous olives, Nyons is the home of the Fert family, the last artisans to make scourtins (woven filters for olive oil extraction), and the Bleu Provence distillery. Distiller Philippe Soguel welcomed us with a warm smile into his establishment on the edge of the river Eygues, a few steps from the center of town. In his distillery, the visitor is greeted by large cylinders and a strong
scent of lavender; the flower, and its cousin lavendin, perfume the distillery’s surroundings in July. Soguel and his team run a modern operation. It has a pedagogical aim, too, with a museum that’s as charming as it is educational, as well as tea room and a shop. Soguel explains the secrets of his savoir-faire to both tourists and regulars alike, dividing his time between his business and his fields of lavender and verbena. Provencal to the core, it’s a place that just makes you feel good – an essential discovery indeed!
