Over just a few square meters, vintage chairs and tables accommodate about twenty happy guests, right next to the open kitchen where Dimitri and Laetitia work away. “People enjoy this family atmosphere” confirms the young man, “and we make sure we prepare the food that goes with it: simple, tasty and seasonal.” A blackboard menu proposes one entrée, one salad, one platter, one main, one dessert, and you can mix and match according to your appetite.

It was back in the day when kids watched “Belle & Sebastian” on the black-and-white TV in the living room while the odor of Maggi bouillon cubes escaped from the kitchen; happy days that under-40s never knew. A time when Formica reigned supreme and wallpaper was covered with geometric patterns, Sputnik style. In Aix-en-Provence , a young couple of restaurant owners are offering a pleasant trip back to the years of the Twist. And their little restaurant could just as easily be called “Feels Like Home”, it’s such a warm and friendly place.

Food

After a first experience in the hotel business in Morocco then an interlude via interior design, the couple unites two passions in the service of a successful remake of the 3-decade long postwar boom. “We had fun looking for furniture all over France” smiles Laetitia. “The idea is really to treat our clients like guests. Some people even ask us if we live here.” If our favorite soup from when we were kids is on the menu here in winter, the couple doesn’t give in to clichés regarding retro cooking: world food is served along with classics such as veal stew or pot au feu.

For early risers, A Table! also serves breakfast adapted to three themes: healthy, classic or English. And in the afternoon, the place turns into a tearoom around delicious crumbles and other mouthwatering homemade cakes.
