Bringing together about forty works, including some special commissions, the exhibition is enjoyed as a stroll, ambling between the works and the site, between our animal and human sides. In a spirit of connection, each wing corresponds to a linked theme. So in the west wing, formerly allocated to domestic activities and to eating rituals, the works question relations of predation and sacrifice. In line with the East Wing’s décor, an astounding bestiary recalls the relationship of companionship or of mimicry that unites man to animal. In the masters’ apartments, another way of thinking about animals puts into perspective the imagination, childhood tenderness and blind fantasy buried inside each of us. The bedrooms become the theatre for a joyous, sensual or disturbing phantasmagoria, with in particular an installation by Katia Bourdarel that, as is her delicious habit, plays with our human identity and animal intimacy.

Exhibition produced in collaboration with the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (Paris), the Musée Gassendi (Digne), the FRAC PACA, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux and the association Voyons Voir.

“So Near, So Far... Man and Beast”

The Château d’Avignon is reclaimed by the animal kingdom. A hunting property originally belonging to a captain of industry in the late 19th century, the site resumes an ongoing connection between man and beast, at the heart of a contemporary art circuit in dialogue with its regional heritage.
