A painting by Paul Cézanne just entered Musée Granet's collection, a portrait of writer Emile Zola.

An Early Work by Cézanne Enters the Granet Museum

The Granet Museum has just acquired a painting by Paul Cézanne, a portrait of Emile Zola painted in 1862 or 1863. Friends since high school, the writer and the artist were just beginning their artistic careers at this time. They were in their twenties when this oil painting was produced. It’s certainly of modest size, but the painting is evidence of a charming spontaneity.

Most probably a reflection of the life the two men were leading, ready to live life to the fullest and take on important projects. The only portrait of Zola painted by Cézanne identified today, the painting will travel to different museums, and in this way allow the Musée Granet to borrow works for its own exhibitions in exchange.
