Christophe, David and Stéphanie, three young thirty-somethings with complementary life-paths oriented towards communication, concert production and cultural event organization, were looking for a space that would reflect their vision. So they have created a transversal, multidisciplinary space out of the Citerne. Wedged in the tiny street of rue Saint Antoine, it retains a meditative air. It is a space charged with history; at its heart, in a vaulted stone hall, stands an authentic 11th-century cistern, whose trap still exists to capture the water from the springs that feed into the Panier neighborhood. In addition to all the new sites that are flourishing at the dawn of Marseille-Provence’s designation as the 2013 European Capital of Culture, a whole series of independent projects are springing up outside of the official program, including the Citerne du Panier (the Panier Cistern).

artist Sebanado saw it entirely filled with plants in “Green Zone.” The space is also equipped with a bar, a covered patio and a beautiful room with exposed beams. The next exhibition, also addressing the question of urban art, will feature the architect Aurélie Vagharchak (January 11th – February 15th) and her photographic work on residents’ capacity to make their city their own… The Citerne is a beautiful local illustration by this young team, who, within less than a year, has managed to create a space dedicated to contemporary art in Marseille’s oldest neighborhood. All that’s left is to reconnect it to the wellspring of local creativity!
