To begin with, the French East India Company imported many colored fabrics. Challenged by the success of these materials, Louvois, a Minister under Louis XIV, decided in 1686 to protect the French industry, notably the Lyon silk trade, by outlawing local production of these “indiennes,” as well as other imports. However the Comtat Venaissin region surrounding Avignon was not subject to the Royal authority, and continued manufacturing these painted and printed fabrics.
