St Rémy de Provence lies on the Alpilles' Northern hills. This historical place was made famous by Vincent Van Gough who painted many pictures of it.
St Rémy an inspiration for Van Gough
Van Gough painted over 150 pieces of St Rémy's countryside and much of what he painted can still be spotted including olive trees, the Alpilles, the colourful wild flowers and the bedroom in Saint Paul de Mausole asylum in which Van Gough stayed for more than a year.
The asylum, now called the Clinique Van Gough, where he committed himself is still there and his bedroom and bathroom can be visited. However it is now a tranquil place with a strange atmosphere about it.
The tragic and talented painter helped turn St Rémy into one of the most famous towns in Provence.
St Rémy a town filled with historical and beautiful buildings
St Rémy de Provence has a wealth of history captured within its architecture from the beautifully restored town houses filled with beautiful art and antiques to the house in Rue Hoche where the Jewish-French physician, mathematician, astrologer and writer Michel de Nostredame was born
Nostradamus wrote many books on astrology and prophecy which made him very rich and famous. He spent most of his life in Salon de Provence and died there in 1956.
Many of the buildings in St Rémy have retained their original features and character and it is one of Provence's most scenic and magical towns.
