Luberon is a fantastic region, offering visitors beautiful countryside, full of vineyards and orchards, little villages nestled within the hills and the chance to sample the delectable local produce, from olives to wine.
Luberon a historical region
The presence of the Roman Empire still stands strong throughout Luberon, mostly in Arles, Waison-la-Romaine, Nimes, Orange and Glanum. In 2007 a life-sized bust from Julius Caesar was found in the Rhone in Arles, which was the oldest relic found of the Roman emperor, who found Arles in 46BC.
Not just the Roman times can be seen in Luberon, but the region in Provence is packed full of history, with many medieval towns and villages still holding a lot of the architecture from this time. This is no more prevalent than in the walled city of Avignon. The maze-like cobbled streets lead to shops with modern necessities and malls, allowing visitors to view the beauty of the past, within the comfort of the present.
Luberon a cultural region
The cultural side of Luberon is endless, with so many places to go hiking and biking, winding through the tranquil scenery, maybe stopping off on the way to sample the produce from the local markets. Luberon is famed for some of the best markets selling a range of locally grown vineyard wines.
Another thing not to miss in Luberon is the vast swathes of lavender found throughout the region. Above Sault, below Mont Ventox and around Apt and Gordes are the places to see the best and largest sources of wild lavender.
Luberon in Provence has so much to offer a visitor to the region. The cuisine and breath-taking surroundings will amaze even the well-travelled tourist.
