Form of the Moss Rose
Moss Rose, also known as 'Black Moss', is a slender, low maintenance shrub popular as an ornamental plant. It can grow over one metre in height and large, bright flowers appear between June and August. The stems and buds are covered in a dark green moss and it is often found in temperate climates, like Provence where it was first bred. It grows thick leaves and needs very little attention but it spreads very easily.
History of the Moss Rose
Some have argued it was first spotted in England or Germany, but Darwin concluded Moss Rose was born back in the late 1600s by a bud variation of the Provence Rose. It was later spotted in England in 1727 and Italy in 1755 but is often found in other warm climates like Brazil and Argentina. Due to their strong, woodsy scent, moss roses became great favourites in Victorian times.
A popular and beautiful plant, the Moss Rose was born hundreds of years ago and is highly popular in gardens across France and England today. Its aromatic scent and bright flowers make it a summer favourite for gardening enthusiasts.
L'OCCITANE's Moss Rose touch
L'OCCITANE en Provence uses Moss Rose extract as an ingredient in some of its products. These range from creams to perfumes thanks to the ingredient's fragrant smell.
