Also known as Juniperus oxycedru, this plant is native to the Mediterranean and parts of the Middle East. It can grow as far above sea level as 1600m and is often found on rocky terrain.
An Essential Flower
Cade, which grows on the hillsides of Provence, is mainly cultivated for its essential oil, which has a strong, smoky smell. This oil is used in homeopathic skin treatments and even incense. Wild juniper is also used as an ingredient to flavor some gins.
An Endangered Species
Despite these hardy flowers being some of the first to sprout from the landscape after the ice age, recent studies have shown that cade is now in decline. This loss of this plant would mean the more than 40 species of insects and fungus that rely on cade would be seriously affected, and most would not be able to survive without it. Many things are being done however to try to stop this, but if you want to get a glance at these beautiful flowers, head to the hillsides in Provence as soon as you can.
