Growing high in the mountains, Artemisia Genepy is an aromatic grey shrub favoured by weary climbers for its refreshing properties. Also known as Black Wormwood, the plant is native to the Pyrénées and the Alps, and its yellow flowers can be seen in rocky areas of Provence's Mercantour National Park from late July to August.
Artemisia Genepy's properties
Having invigorated climbers for centuries, Artemisia Genepy is effective in skin creams as a defence against free radicals. It makes a good tonic and expectorant, although its scarcity means it is rarely used as a medicinal treatment.
The uses of Artemisia Genepy
While Artemisia Genepy was traditionally used to treat chills and digestive complaints, today its flowers are more commonly used as ingredients for making Genepi herbal liqueurs. The liqueur, which is drunk as a digestif, can be sampled at the Maison du Pastis distillery in Marseille. However, widespread commercial production has led to the plant becoming endangered and so only limited amounts of Artemisia Genepy can be picked each season.
L'OCCITANE's Verdon range
L'OCCITANE uses Artemisia Genepy in its Verdon range of body, bath and shower products, only sourcing the plant from certified-organic cultivations tended by hand in the Upper Alps. Named after the dramatic Verdon Gorge in Provence, the Verdon Eau de Toilette for men blends the delicate scent of Artemisia Genepy with notes of bergamot and lemon.
